Internet Browsers and Speed

Many of you will agree with me when I say that some Internet Browsers are faster than others, and that would be expected. Why? Because each browser manufacturer is trying to prove their product as being the best thing since sliced bread. The truth be told, there are many different internet browsers on the market today, some of which most of us have never heard of. So much for that.

Based on my experience with internet browsers that I have used over the years, I would say that FireFox (this is my opinion now) is the fastest when compared to Netscape, Opera, and Internet Explorer. I say so because when I compare the speed, or loading time, of FireFox to the other three, the pages come up much quicker. In addition, I like the tabbed browsing effect (I know that Opera and IE7 have it) which keeps my taskbar neat. To get from one page to another, all I have to do is click on the tab I want and, voila!, I am there.

I would imagine that the new IE7 would have a great improvement on speed compared to its predecessors, but I have not had a chance to try it yet, so my opinion remains in favour of FireFox. Netscape in itself is not bad, nor is Opera (which I used extensively before I started using FireFox). So, in order of speed, from the fastest to the slowest, here are my choices:

- FireFox
- Opera
- Internet Explorer
- Netscape

Keep in mind that this analysis is based on my experience. Others may have a different experience with which one loads faster, but for me FireFox rules (at least for now)!

Network Cables and ISO 9000

Industrial standards are applied throughout just about every facet of internationally used piping systems, cables, screws, nuts, bolts, beds, tiles, tyres, paints, lubricants, clothing, and so much more. What this does is to standardize these products so that anywhere in the world you go, the quality would be consistent. Say for example you live in Australia and bought a hard drive for your laptop. You then travelled to Japan where your hard drive failed and needed to be replaced. You would then be able to buy a new hard drive in Japan that would fit your laptop because of the standardized size of the hard drive for laptops. This makes accessing things we need much easier than before compared to once upon a time when you would have to discard a perfectly good piece of equipment and buy a new one because the spare parts available in your country could not fit it.

ISO 9000 standards are applied to products. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) ensures that quality standards are maintained worldwide. Since the world is one big global market, it is important that such standards be in place. As it relates to Network Cables, these same conventions apply. The main types of network cables are:

- CAT5e
- CAT6
- Coaxial
- Fiber Optic
- RJ45
- Twisted Pair

With the ISO Standards applied, anywhere in the world that you go and buy any of these cables, you can be sure they will work in any other part of the world. And quality is also assured. This saves on cost and time as you would not have to buy a different cable in each country you go - simply carry the one you already have! An exerpt from the ISO 9000 websites states:

The ISO 9000 family is primarily concerned with “quality management”. This means what the organization does to fulfil:

- the customer’s quality requirements, and
- applicable regulatory requirements, while aiming to
- enhance customer satisfaction, and
- achieve continual improvement of its performance in pursuit of these objectives.

Truly remarkable! We are thus guaranteed quality products - money well spent.

Owning a piece of prime real estate is the desire of the not so faint at heart. When we speak of prime real estate, we are talking about houses, land, the works. Keeping in mind that people have different tastes, CondoCompany.com recently launched a program they dub “Building Specialists”. Virus Information

It has been a while since I last posted any information on viruses, so here is a rundown of some of the viruses that are presently out there:

W32/Sober.r@MM:
New mass-mailing worm that includes code to prevent stinger.exe from being effectively run.

W32/Mydoom.bc@MM, W32/Mydoom.bd@MM, W32/Mydoom.be@MM:
Three new variants of the Mydoom mass mailing worm. All three variants leave the BackDoor-CEB.f trojan horse program behind.

W32/Bropia.worm.p:
Internet worm that propagates through MSN Messenger.

W32/Mydoom.bb@MM (W32.Mydoom.AX@mm):
Mass-mailing worm similar to earlier variants of MyDoom. MyDoom.bb also downloads and installs this back-door Trojan software on target machines.

W32/Zafi.d@MM:
E-mail virus with mass-mailer

W32/Sober.j@MM (W32.Sober.I@mm):
Variant of an older mass-mailer

W32/Netsky.ag@MM (W32.Netssky.AD@mm):
E-mail Virus

W32/Bagle.az@MM (W32.Beagle.AR@mm):
Another Mass-mailing Worm

W32/Bagle.ag@MM (W32.Beagle.AC@MM):
Mass-mailing Worm that also propagates via peer-to-peer networks

W32/Bagle.n@MM (W32.Bagle.M@mm):
Polymorphic mass-mailing worm with its own mail sending engine

There’s plenty more around, and even more being added almost daily. For a more exhaustive list, run a search on the search engines for “latest virus names” and see how many more you can identify.

Always remember to keep your antivirus software up-to-date.
