Power Cords

There are various types of power cords used on electrical amd electronic equipment. The end that is plugged into the surface outlet is usuall a two or three pin plug (third pin for grounding). The other end that is plugged into the equipment is also usually a two or three pin connection. Some have four or more, depending on the equipment itself. As for computers, the plug end of the power cord has three pins while the other end also has three holes.

To differentiate between the power cord used on the monitor and on the CPU, the one for the CPU is usually thicker. The general reason for this is that the CPU pulls more power than the monitor and thus the thicker cord is less likely to melt or catch afire. This is the convention that dictates the size cords used on many equipment. The more current it pulls, the thicker the power cord. This is despite the voltage used, whether 110V or 220V.

Power cords must be regularly inspected for cracks or tears. There are times when the cord might be under some level of strain which eventually leads to its deterioration over time. If at any time you notice when the power cord is moved and the equipment is on it suddenly loses power, this is a sign to change it. This is very importatnt as the shorting out of the power cord can result in fire and eventual damage to the computer.

Recording Audio To Computer

There are only a few ways in which audio can be recorded to a computer. The two main ways are through a microphone or through the auxillary input port. It is as easy as it sounds.

To record through the microphone, simply connect your microphone to the computer and start your recording software. This software could be Sound Recorder found on the Windows Operating System. To record through the auxillary input port, connect the output of the playback device to the computer.

Acetaminophen and Epocrates, Inc.

With so many drugs out there on the market, it is often hard to keep track of them, let alone remember all their names and dosages and other contraindications. There are many websites on the internet with the information but not all medical professionals have the time to surf all these websites to find the information that they want. A solution to this has been devised by Epocrates, Inc., a leading developer of mobile applications based in San Mateo, California. They first devised a trusted mobile drug and formulary guide that can be accessed by PDA. Now they also offer a free Web-based Drug and Health Plan Formulary Product that has so far been used by more than 500,000 healthcare professionals who are seeking critical information about more than 3,300 drugs, including dosing, pricing, potential drug interactions and Medicare Part D formulary coverage. As long as these professionals have a computer with an Internet connection, they can access the information.

One of the many types of drugs that Epocrates provides information on is Acetaminophen. The information mentions the dosage amount, contraindications, reaction with other drugs, cost, patient education, and more. They also provide the names and pictures of pills, tablets, capsules, and liquid medicine that contain acetaminophen. So helpful has been the information provided by Epocrates, Inc. that Jacob Wood, MD, Assistant Professor, UAB Selma Family Residency Program, had this to say: “I’ve been using Epocrates products on my PDA for years and find them indispensable to my practice. I think it is wonderful that my colleagues and staff that don’t yet use a PDA can now access the same information online to help them improve patient care.”

Epocrates products are highly credible since they are designed by practicing physicians who want to provide the most clinically useful and relevant information to other health care professionals, giving these professionals more time to focus on patient care once they use the Epocrates website and PDA application as their primary source for clinical reference needs. This online product has been so successful that Kirk Loevner, Epocrates Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, had this to say: “The new online offering will help us grow our network beyond the healthcare professionals that currently use our PDA-based applications. Epocrates Online also provides us with the opportunity to develop content and services that are optimized for an online platform.”

Epocrates Online has an extensive drug guide and formulary information for more than 130 health plans and hundreds of Medicare Part D formularies, allowing medical professionals to quickly and easily access formulary status, drug coverage and alternative and generic drug options for the various health plans of their patients. Clinicians and medical support staff who want a more in-depth online reference can subscribe to the Epocrates Online premium product. This premium service is packed with additional features and a lot more content. These include more than 400 alternative medicine monographs, patient education handouts, pill pictures, pill identifier, and hundreds of medical tables and calculations. As such, Jacob Wood says that he would like to “encourage all healthcare professionals to use Epocrates products via the Internet or a PDA. They are such a valuable resource and convenient tool that once you try it, you won’t know what you ever did without them.”

Truly a leader in its class, Epocrates is transforming the practice of medicine by providing innovative clinical solutions to all medical professionals at the point of care and cutting-edge technology that enables and fosters effective communication. There are over 500,000 health care professionals that are connected by the clinical network developed by Epocrates. Statistics show that one in every four physicians in the U.S. and one in two U.S. medical students, along with other healthcare stakeholders, are a part of this vast network. Epocrates was recently ranked at number 176 out of 500 of the fastest growing private companies in the U.S. in the 25th annual ‘Inc.500′.

A true testament to what can happen when dedicated professionals aim to provide quality services to others in their field, Epocrates has certainly gone beyond the call of duty to ensure high standards and timely information. They are an organization that we can truly be proud of.

Dialup or Always Online

The various ways that people connect to the internet are quite vast indeed. There are wired and wireless ways of doing so. In some cases, one either dials up or is always online. So, what is the difference?

Dialup Internet entails the user entering a Username and Password to access the internet. Dialup speeds usually go up to 56 kbps using a modem. Above that ADSL modems are used to achieve higher speeds. Even with some of these DSL modems one has to dialup. This is especially true with USB Modems.

Always Online does not require the user to enter a username and password. Just like a LAN (Local Area Network), once the computer is turned on and the operating system loads, all one has to do is open the web browser and start surfing. This is my favourite choice. An Ethernet connection allows this to happen whereby the Internet c0nnection is ‘kept alive’ via the DSl Modem once it is connected to a power source and the DSL line.

Which do you prefer? I can bet it is the Always Online connection. This was just a brief look at the difference between dialup and always online internet connections. Subsequent articles will show the difference between other contrasting things used on the computer.

Different Types of Connectors and Cables

Here is a small list of the different types of connectors that are normally used on a computer:

BNC Connector

BNC connectors are generally used on Network Cards with a male BNC end on the card.

RCA Connector

RCA connectors are used for audio and video connections from some sound cards and TV cards. The general convention is that yellow is for video and red/white is for audio.

F- Connector (Coaxial)

F-connectors are generally used on TV cards to feed a cable or antenna feed to the card. It is the used on coaxial cables.

S-Video

S-video connections are also found genrally on graphics and TV cards. Some sound cards also come with S-video connection capability.

1/4 Jack

The 1/4 Jack (or connector) is usually for audio and can be mono or stereo. You would not generally find a 1/4 connection on a computer. You would have to use a 1/4 to 1/8 converter if you wish to connect it to your computer.

1/8 Jack

The 1/8 Jack (connector) is generally plugged into the microphone, auxillary audio (in), and speaker ports. Again, colour convention applies: green - auxillary audio (in), orange/pink - microphone, purple - audio out.

Cheap Car Insurance

Competitive rates for car insurance. Insurance companies, like Progressive Direct are increasingly using advanced technology to help consumers easily find cheap car insurance rates online. Progressive Direct is a unit of a U.S. auto insurer and was created specially for that purpose.

To highlight the diversity of Progressive Direct, it recently teamed up with Universal Studios Home Entertainment to insert a running tally (a calculator) of the destruction into the recent HD DVD release of “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.” What this calculator, labeled “Progressive Direct: Insurance Damage Estimates”, does is compute the cost of the damage the cars in the movie receive when they crash into each other. Universal and other studios hope that the concept of this calculator will be the first in a stream of branded interactive features on their new DVDs which have about six times as much data capacity as standard DVDs. This feature is hoped to form part of a new revenue stream for the studios. Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment, stated that “Product placement is hard because it doesn’t all fit, but this gives us new opportunities. In the early days, it was a movie on a disc. Now we can take it anywhere.” Steven Kovsky, an electronics analyst for Current Analysis, a technology research company based in Washington, noted: “I can’t remember the last time I or anyone I know checked out the ancillary info on these discs. I’m a little skeptical that the new formats will suddenly unlock vast amounts of new revenue because you are putting more stuff out there that people don’t want to begin with.” Progressive Direct created a Web site, www.progressivefastandfurious.com, and created contests to promote the disc and the movie in exchange for having its name on the crash calculator.

The online insurance marketplace that CarInsurance.com provides benefits both consumers and insurance companies - it allows consumers to shop for car insurance online thus meeting the consumers’ requests, and solving the needs of insurance companies. With real-time insurance rates online, consumers are able to receive quotes from many insurance companies at the same time. A quote from their website says: “In an age of fast everything, you can now get fast auto insurance. When you request a quote from CarInsurance.com, after answering a few simple questions you can instantly get a quote from multiple companies.” As an added incentive, persons are able to purchase their insurance online in some states. In line with this, their website further states: “Once you select a company, we will ask more detailed questions in each category, pull any underwriting reports and supply you with a final verified, accurate rate. You can then purchase online or call our call center to complete the policy and print your proof of insurance.”

So CarInsurance.com, through its flagship unit Progressive Direct is truly what the doctor ordered. Now you can save time and money by purchasing insurance for your car online, no matter the time of day or night.

Pondering - The Year That Was (Almost)

This year has flown by so fast that I cannot believe there are just a few weeks left. Well, I guess it is as they say: “Time waits for no man.” A lot has been achieved in the fields of technology and the sciences. This year has seen computers get smaller, digital cameras being more powerful, processors running at tetra-grade speeds, security systems becoming smarter, and much more.

Due to technology being a constantly advancing part of everyday life, we often take it for granted and just continue to live life ‘as is’. One thing I have observed happening over and over again is pesons discarding gadgets and other electronics and non-electronic items that are in perfectly good condition to get the latest device. I don’t know about you but money is not always easy to come by. As such, as long as something I have is working fine, I see no need to discard it.

Of course it is nice to have the latest of everything, but in a practical sense it does not pay off. Have you seen how many people have gone into serious debt in order to “keep up with the Jones’”? Persons have maxed their credit cards and then go and take out another one and max it. It is like a viscious cycle. And there is no end in sight. No wonder debt aid organizations are thriving now. “Bad credit? No problem. We will help you recover.” That is what they promise, and I am sure the majority truly help people.

Anyway, just remember to spend wisely. Buy only what you need, not what you want (unless of course it won’t hurt your pocket). And always look out for a good bargain. The year is not yet finished, so be careful.

New Internet Scam - Find Link Directories

PRESS RELEASE:
November 19, 2006

Ever so often we come across scams on the internet that have robbed persons of millions of dollars. The scam I am about to talk about does not have an upfront cost. In fact, you don’t have to pay anything at all. All you need to do is find link directories for a specific product or service, send them the info. and then you get paid. Well, the part about getting paid never happens. So, you end up wasting valuable time doing ‘charity’ work.

Here is how it all started. I saw an ad online that stated persons could get paid for finding link directories, i.e. the exact page where you would place the links (reciprocal or not) to your site for a particular category. So, I wrote to the email address listed and go this response:

From: ELinkadia@aol.com
Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2006 12:24:54 EDT
Subject: JOB POSITION: Included is your Category.
To: [My Email Address]

Thank you for accepting our job offer for the Internet Research and Data Gathering Position.

We have your information on file and are ready to assist you in any way we can for you to succeed with our Team.

You are to search various search engines such as google, yahoo, and others for “link directories” which are on web sites that are related to your category. Once you find these “link directories” , you are to keep a list of the URL that links to the form where users can input their information in order to be listed in that “link directory”.

So once again… We don’t need you to input any information. All we need is the URL (link) to the form for that link directory. Each URL you find and add to your list is worth .40 (us) cents.

There is NO LIMIT to your work. The more links you find, the more money you earn.

We ask all of our team members to meet a minimum of finding 50 links per week. If one week you find less that 50 links, these links will be carried over to the next week. You will be paid until you have 50 or more links at any given Friday of any week.
Of coarse, if you exceed 50 links you will be paid by every Sunday of any week to your Paypal.com account.

YOU ARE ASSIGNED CATEGORY: “AUTOMOTIVE / VEHICLE” (boats, cars, planes, etc.)

You may find ANY web site with a link directory that is related in any way to this category.
If you are not sure if a certain subject is relative to this category, please ask us!

We recommend that you create a text file or email with the URL’s that you find.
We also want you to email us (ELINKADIA@AOL.COM) with your list when you have found about 50 links. We will keep a record of your progress, as you should keep your own records as well. It is also wise to constantly save and label your work.

You may email us at anytime, with any question.

It is our pleasure to have you on our team and look forward to your success with us.

Thank you,
US MARKETING CORP
Operations Manager
Jake Jaffeth
Elinkadia@aol.com

So, as a test, I did just as the guy requested and even submitted more than the required 50 links. Guess what? I never got a reply from this Jake guy and up till this day, I have not received any money. And as you clearly see this is from September 1, 2006, more than two months after submitting the information.

Look out for fraudulent emails or ads claiming that you will get paid for finding link directories. People like Jake Jaffeth (provided this is even his/her real name) are only out there to use people to, in my opinion, do their work for them while they collect the money. This scam is obviously a case of the person who sends out the ads getting paid by someone who they agreed to do work for, but who in turn use others to do all the work while they sit back and collect the cheque.

Beware of ads that say you will get paid for finding link directories, especially the one mentioned in this Press Release.
