Communications has come a far way. Before the West was won, for example, they had the Pony Express which used to carry mail from one point to another. Then there came the the ‘choo choo’ train that basically revolutionized how information could be transmitted. Further on, motor vehicles came into play. Then Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, the turning point in the various communication possibilities .
When we consider how media is transmitted today, there are endless means that operate at different speeds. Microwave links are ‘line-of-sight’ media, i.e. each dish must be able to see the other in order to transmit information. This is a high speed transmission media. Satellites are also used to transmit data. Earth Stations and other localized earth-based satellite systems communicate with the satellites in space. If you are looking for a particular program or signal, your land-based satellite must be orinted with the correct satellite in space that has the signal you need. DSS (Digital Satellite Systems) also require that they are positioned in line with the satellies that carry movies and sports and so on.
Then we come down to hard wired solutions like Coaxial Cables, RG11 Cables (POTS), RG45 Cables (Network), and Fibre Optics. Wireless includes Infrared and now the famous BlueTooth Technology. The pssibilities are endless, and there will be more to come in the future. For more information on Mixed Transmission Media, go to Google or Yahoo! or MSN and do a search. What you find will be very interesting.
