Speakers As Microphones

Did you know that speakers can be used as microphones? Neither did I, ’till I decided to experiment and see what happened. I tried it many years ago and found that it worked. How did I do it? Well, the speakers had a 1/8 jack on the end that I plugged into the radio (yeah, not a computer at the time). After plugging it into the microphone receptacle, I put in a tape started and started recording. I then spoke into the speaker and, voila, when I played back the tape I heard my voice.

The reason why this was possible is because the makeup of the speaker is similar to that of the microphone. Both have a coil that vibrate when audio hits it. The audio (sound energy) is transformed into electrical energy which is transmitted to the recording head which writes to the tape as sound energy. That’s why it oworks. It also works on the computer.

Please note that this was all for fun. If you are going to do any serious recording, use a microphone.

Good And Bad Sound

The quality of sound from a computer can be the difference between enjoyable audio and ear-piercing sounds. Sometimes the sound is so bad that it becomes inaudible. When this happens, persons get turned away from what they are hearing and just don’t bother.

This is also the case with some internet sites. It is nice to hear websites that have audio that is audible. I have visited websites that have terrible audio. Sometimes it is a sample of a popular song or some other sound. But the quality leaves a lot to be desired. In any case, whenever you upload audio files, ensure that it sounds okay before and after uploading. If it sounds terrible, you just might lose potential customers who may never return to your website.
