Adjusting Your Date and Time Settings

The date and time settings on some computers go awry sometimes. One of the most common reasons why they suddenly get wrong when all of the time before that they were right is because of the battery. If the battery is weak then it will certainly result in you seeing incorrect date and time values on your computer. If this is the case with you, change the battery. After changing the battery, and even if there is nothing wrong with it and the time and date are wrong, you will need to reset them both.

Below is an image of how the date and time settings window under the Windows OS looks:

It is quite easy to make the adjustments. First of all, to get to this window, double-click on the clock in your System tray (located at the bottom right hand corner of your screen). To adjust the time under the Date & Time tab, highlight the hours and type in the right hour or use the up/down arrow keys beside it to make the changes. Do the same for the minutes, seconds and AM/PM respectively, then click on Apply. To adjust the date, select the month from the drop down box and scroll to the correct year. Then click on the correct date of the month and click on Apply.

To adjust your Time Zone, click on the Time Zone tab and use the arrow beside the time zones to selelct the one that applies to your part of the world. If you have DST (Daylight Savings Time), click on the box beside it and then click on Apply. When you are finished, click the OK button.

Scanner Issues With Some Operating Systems

Many, if not most, people have a scanner at home or at work. This tool is quite valuable as it allows you to make copies of documents. The scanned document can be either black and white or in colour. There is no denying that an office basically is not an office without a scanner. The types vary, from flatbed to ones that are shaped like printers to ones that are part of a combo (printer, scanner, fax all in one). Having it is one thing, getting it to work with your Operating System is quite another matter. In my experience, a scanner will work quite easily on one OS and refuse to even install on another.

The solution, however, is quite simple. Scanners, like most other devices, can use drivers that were not specifically made for them. For instance, you may have an IBM scanner that will work with the drivers for a Primax scanner. This being the case, one can easily search the internet for compatible drivers that will allow your scanner to work on a particular system. So, if you were using Windows 2000 where your scanner worked fine but then migrated to Windows XP where the drivers you have can’t be used, then simply search the web for a compatible driver. In many cases, drivers of almost any scanner of the type you have can work, hypothetically speaking.

If you have a flatbed scanner, what I am saying is that the drivers of any other flatbed scanner should be able to work. The same should apply for any other type of scanner. But this is not always the case. Trial and error is what will help you to find the right ‘alternative’ driver for your scanner. So the next time your scanner seems as if it does not want to work on a particular OS, don’t throw it away. Just search for a driver that will make it work.

Problems Associated With Viruses

Once we use the internet, there is the possibility of our computers being exposed to the threat of viruses. No matter how sophisticated an antivirus program we may have is, viruses have been known to seep through. It is important, though, to know what signs to look out for just in case an infection has proliferated on our computer. Knowing them can be the difference between saving a computer from early or having to salvage what is left of your files and hardware. Here are a few things to look out for (these problems can also be caused by other factors but these are mainly associated with a virus infestation):

- The computer suddenly becomes sluggish while in operation
- The CPU Usage Monitor (Ctrl+Alt+Del then Task Manager then Performance tab) shows 100% usage when you are doing nothing
- The operating system takes forever to load, or never loads at all
- Opening a program proves to be very time consuming
- The mouse pointer starts behaving irratically and moves by itself
- Keyboard lights go on and off by themselves without user intervention
- Your antivirus program trips in very frequently advising you of a threat on your machine
- When saving documents, either it refuses to save or takes a very long time
- The computer keeps shutting down without user or timed inervention
- When you turn the computer on, once it reaches the Windows (or Mac) screen during bootup, it just keeps restarting
- Programs and files on your machine suddenly “disappear” (they were there the day before and you did not remove them)
- You see programs installed on your machine that you did not put there

The list above is in no way exhausted as there are many other things you can look out for. It is still essential to install an antivirus program, nonetheless. And always ensure that its virus signatures are up to date.
