Uninstalling Software Completely

There have been many times when we have all uninstalled programs from our computers. This means completely removing them from our machines, or so we think. One point to note is that not all uninstallations completely remove a program and its related directory or directories and files. You know this is the case especially when after completing the process, you get a message stating that not all componenets were successfully removed. There is a button called “Details” that is active and when you click on it, you are shown what was not successfully removed from the computer. What one needs to do at that time is take action.

Here is what you need to do. Based on what the message says, locate the remaining files and directories and manually delete them. This means opening up My Computer or Windows Explorer and browsing to the folders and perform the delete process of both files and folder. In addition, some programs tend to leave some stuff in your registry. Open Registry Editor (Start then Run and type “regedit” and then click OK), click on Edit and select Find. Type the name of the program you are looking for and then click Find Next. For example, if you deleted a program called Nexus, type “nexus” as the search term. Anywhere instances of this word (or whatever word it is you are searching for) occurs, right-click on it and select Delete and then Yes. Then press F3 to find more occurences. When the task has been completed, Registry Editor will let you know.

Wireless Networking

As times change, the conventional ways of setting up a network has become more or less tedious. The fact is that with the expanse of communications and telecommunications making the world a very small place, it is impossible to connect any two or more global networks via cables only. The global village of which we are all residents now demands the use of wireless networking protocols and systems. As such, wireless communications have literally taken over every aspect of how we keep in touch. Almost everything we do today depends on some form of wireless interaction.

Let us look at the whole picture logically. If you wish to speak via web cam to a friend in another country, at some point during the whole process some wireless device plays a role. So, if you are in the United States and have a friend in the North Pole, it is very easy to talk to that person (audio and video). The simple process goes like this:

^ You are connected to the internet via your ISP, whether dial up or broadband (can be hard wired or wireless connection)
^ The ISP is connected to either their own VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) or uses the service of a phone company or other private entity
^ The VSAT points into space at a communications satellite with which it exchanges data and information (this is wireless, of course)
^ The communications satellite is linked to an earth station that also sends and receives information between itself and the satellite
^ The earth station sends its data to Central Stations of telephone companies which in turn connect the computers on the network to the person you wish to speak to

Pretty cool, huh?! Wireless networking is indeed here to stay and as time goes by it gets more and more sophisticated. The quality of the transmitted media is also getting better and better and we can expect to see some fantastic changes in media and communications.

How To Know When Your Hard Drive Is Going

Permanent storage devices include Zip disks, Jazz disks, Hard Drives, CD’s, DVD’s, Mini DVD’s, Mini CD’s, and so on. The one that is used most often, though, is the Hard Drive. It is the piece of hardware that contains your Operating System and all the files that your computer needs to operate properly. But just like anything man-made, Hard Drives do have a life span. Eventually, they will start giving trouble and then one day it go kaput on you. Sometimes there may be no obvious warning that it is ready to crash. There are however some that you can look out for and make sure that you pay attention to.

Here are a few that are common (even I have have experienced a few of them before my disk crashed some time ago):

- The Hard Drive starts starts making very loud noises, most times like pieces of metal rubbing together or the Hard Drive’s RPM becomes erratic
- Booting the computer from the Hard Drive becomes increasingly difficult
- When you turn the computer on, the BIOS settings do not show your hard drive even though it was there the last time you used the machine
- While booting up, you get an error that says “Invalid Disk. Press any key to boot from another device”, or something like that
- “Invalid System Disk” error when attempting to boot from the Hard Drive
- Operating System tends to hang up frequently and some times eventually freezes for periods of up to an hour or more (Note that this same symptom can be present if there is also a virus problem on your computer or if your Hard Drive needs to be defragmented)
- There are times when Windows gives you the ‘blue screen of death’ stating that a critical OS file has been corrupted and so Windows cannot continue loading or operating
- The computer tells you right out that your Hard Drive is about to fail

There are many other symptoms that are associated with an inevitable failure of a Hard Drive. You can do further searches on the causes of Hard Disk failure by using Google Search. I hope this article has nonetheless helped you to see some of the possible signs to look out for if your Hard Drive is on the verge of crashing.
