For some projects that you may have that need audio as a part of the package, it is not always good enough to have a regular desktop microphone. One of the main reasons why this is so is because the microphone tends to pick up ambient sounds easily. Noise from your computer, air conditioning units, fans, and even external noises can be picked up by the microphone. It is true that using a wind baffle helps to reduce the noise, but some unwanted noises still get through. This can be quite annoying especially if the audio quality that results is less than acceptable. So what can be done to further reduce and eventually eliminate unwanted noises in audio recordings done through a microphone?

Using a headset is one way of reducing to an acceptable level external noises. Since the microphone is right up to the mouth, and the distance can be managed, you will hear more of your voice than other ambient sounds. Many of the headsets come with baffles to also help prevent your breathing and “p” sounds from sounding “poppy” (the letter p, when spoken by some persons, make a popping sound). Some people breathe very heavily and the baffle virtually eliminates that sound while recording is in progress. Another good thing to do when recording is to do so in a quiet area. The less background noises you have is the better the recording quality will be. A sound proof area is your best bet, but that will not be possible for the ordinary man. That being the case, aim to do your recording at a time of day that is quieter than the rest.
Even with all this, there are times when you may get a humming sound in your recording. This may be due to a faulty microphone cable, usually a broken or breaking wire. If you find this as a problem, try to replace the cable as soon as possible. Following these few tips will help you to produce quality recordings that others will appreciate. The better your recordings is is the more likely people will want to listen to everything that you have to say.
