Many programs on television today are not suited for children below certain ages. Unfortunately, not all homes have the capability of blocking these programs because the television sets, cable boxes, and VCR’s are not capable of blocking them. The V-Chip has been designed to solve that problem. It is an electronic chip that works in conjunction with a television, cable box, or VCR, allowing you to a rating level you feel appropriate for your children. The V-Chip reads the transmitted ratings code for all programming and then automatically denies access to programs that go beyond your preset ratings limitations.
How the V-Chip works is quite simple. It intercepts a ratings code transmitted by broadcasters and then interprets the code, transmitting a signal to your television with instructions to deny access to all programs or video that exceed your preset ratings limitations. When the television receives this code, the channels that display unapproved programming will display an “unauthorized to receive message” on a blank screen. The V-Chip comes pre-installed in newer televisions and is not available in stores. So you may just need to get a new one so that you can control what your children are watching.
