Speakers As Microphones

Did you know that speakers can be used as microphones? Neither did I, ’till I decided to experiment and see what happened. I tried it many years ago and found that it worked. How did I do it? Well, the speakers had a 1/8 jack on the end that I plugged into the radio (yeah, not a computer at the time). After plugging it into the microphone receptacle, I put in a tape started and started recording. I then spoke into the speaker and, voila, when I played back the tape I heard my voice.

The reason why this was possible is because the makeup of the speaker is similar to that of the microphone. Both have a coil that vibrate when audio hits it. The audio (sound energy) is transformed into electrical energy which is transmitted to the recording head which writes to the tape as sound energy. That’s why it oworks. It also works on the computer.

Please note that this was all for fun. If you are going to do any serious recording, use a microphone.

Computer Slow Downs

Computers tend to slow down over time as we keep adding more and more programs and files to it. As such, we need to constantly remove old and un-needed files on a regular basis. In addition, defragmentation of the computer hard drive may become necessary after a period of time. Remember, too, that programs and software that consume a lot of memory will cause a computer to lose speed.

To improve performance, defragment regularly and, if you have small amounts of memory, install a memory booster so as to help free up memory when needed. If at all possible, add more memory to your PC to aid in improving program loading times. Uninstall unnecessary programs, especially large ones, that take up a lot of disk space.

Hooking Up Your PC To Your Component Set

Been to the movies lately? Have you ever been amazed by the superb surround sound in the theatres? Did you know that you can have this same sort of sound at home, using only your computer and a component set? Yes, it’s true! The heart-throbbing sounds of a movie cinema’s sound can be duplicated.

To set up your computer to run through your component set, here is what you need to do:

1. Obtain a 1/8 (male) to double-RCA (female) adapter .
2. Buy a length of twin male-to-male RCA cables.
3. Connect one end each of the male-to-male RCA cables to the double-RCA (female) adapter.
4. Plug the other end of the adapter into your computer’s sound port.
5. Then plug the other two ends of the male-to-male RCA cables into the auxillary input at the back of your computer.
6. Turn your component system on and switch to auxillary input. Set the volume to a low level and gradually increase it to a comfortable level once you start playing from your computer.
7. Lock and load! Your home cinema is ready.

Adjusting the bass levels will give your home more of a “rumbling” effect, making your experience even more wonderful.
