The Lighting Element

Proper lighting is crucial to many aspects of a business operation. If you run a store, inside lighting has to be bright so that customers can see what it is they are shopping for without having to strain their eyes. Coca Cola now has a new flavour. It is called Coke zero and, as the name suggests, it has zero something, namely sugar. The campaigns are on to promote the new Coke and the Coca Cola company has been ingenious in the way they go about getting some hype for the new kid on the block. What they have done is to find some old black and white film clips that they make editable by you, in your capacity as the director, so that you can manipulate it using a voice recorder. You are also able to edit “the conversation” for the clip that you choose to edit. After you have finished editing, your movie will compete with others to see which gets the highest rating. You can also send the movie to your family and friends for them to see. To participate in the Coke Zero campaign, you will have to visit the website where you will be able to direct the movie of your choice, send it to family and friends, and wait for your ratings to pile up.

Coke zero : Life as it should be : Real taste, zero sugar. That is the healthy message they are sending to all Coke drinkers. Business Letterheads

Believe it or not, there are a number of companies and other business entities that do not use proper company letterheads when sending out mail to persons or other companies. This looks very unprofessional and can detract from the serious nature of the content of the letters that they post. Look at it from this standpoint: You get a letter from a company named “Oil Diggers Inc.” saying that you are being offered employment with them. Now, if the letter is just a plain ‘good day sir/madam, yadda yadda, yours sincerely whomever’, and there is no letterhead at the top of the letter, how seriously would you take that letter? I would disregard it, to be frank. So a letterhead carries much weight and should not be an issue that is pushed aside.

A company will seem to be more credible if they have a letterhead on all their letters, memos, etc. that are circulated, especially externally. It does have to be the flashiest letterhead with the brightest graphics, but if it looks good and has a professional touch to it, the contents of the letter will be taken more seriously. There are however so scammers who use this as a means of catching unwary individuals and organizations, in so much as to say that they write powerful letters with great letterheads requesting donations and so on that are for non-existent organizations. But those are in the minority. All you need to do is check to see if a company that claims to be X is in fact X and not just a ruse. Nonetheless, if you have a business, endeavour to have letterheads, or even a company logo, on your documents and letters so that it will appear more authentic and trustworthy and keep you on the good side of your clients.

Storage Space Considerations

When one operates a business that needs to carry a large inventory of items, storage space is a critical factor that needs to be carefully considered. If the storage area is too small, this will reduce your ability to have sufficient items on hand in case what you have in the store runs out. This means you will have to call your suppliers more frequently to make deliveries of supplies to you. So, having ample storage space is vital. It saves you both money and time in the long run.

If you are planning on setting up a business, try to estimate how much stock you will need to keep, find out how much space the different types of supplies will take up (based on the amount that you will need to keep in stores), and then total everything so that you will have a rough idea of the amount of space you will need. Then add a few more square feet to the final measurement as a precaution. It is better to have too much space than too little space. For example, if you have calculated that the amount of space all the goods you keep in store will take up about 500 square feet, build your storage room to a specification of about 550 square feet. The extra space may just come in handy one day. So be wise and carefully calculate your storage space needs. You will end up patting yourself on the back further down the road.

What Is Grapevine Communication?

Grapevine is the informal means of communication. It has been around from the beginning of time and continues to thrive even more so in our modern times. When you think of grapevine communication, do not think of the formal communication from manager to supervisor to sub-employees. We are speaking about someone hearing something and then telling it to someone else who in turn tells someone else, who in turn tells it someone else… get the picture?! So it is not the formal means by which news is being spread. It is as one would say - “by word of mouth.” Compared to the formal structure, it is by far the quickest way for news to travel.

She overhears Mark (a manager) tell Tom (a supervisor) that some workers are going to be laid off. Before Tom gets to prepare the Memo with the info for the staff to see, Sarah tells Jane what she heard. Jane in turn tells Tina. Tina then tells Susan. And so on and so forth. Thus the news travels like wild fire. By the time the Memo comes out, everyone knew about it long in advance. Such is the power of grapevine communication.

The layout of a store tends to either attract or repel customers. When a store is properly laid out it tends to make more customers willing to enter your store and buy from you. Once there is easy to access merchandise that you are selling and similar items in the same area, it will make shopping much easier. Look at it this way: A supermarket that has all toiletries in one area compared to one that has them strewn all over the store, which one do you think will get more recurring customers? It would definitely be the first one since it is easier for the same type of items to be found in one central location.

It is simply common sense - shoppers and consumers want to be able to find things easily. They do not want to have to hunt through a store to find what they need. Self Service Businesses

As many businesses are trying to cut costs, some have opted for the self-service model of operation. This simply means that customers serve themselves while at the business establishment either before after they have paid for goods.
